Key Points
- Belkin Wemo Shutdown Will Kill Most Devices by 2026
- Only HomeKit-configured devices will keep working
- Wemo app, cloud access, and support will shut down
- Partial refunds may be available for in-warranty devices
In a surprising but not entirely unexpected move, Belkin has announced it will shut down support for almost all of its Wemo smart home devices by January 31, 2026. This marks a major shift away from the brandโs smart home ambitions and leaves thousands of customers in a tough spot.
Shared via email and confirmed on its website, Belkin explained that features relying on cloud servicesโincluding remote access, voice assistant integration, and the Wemo appโwill all stop working.

The only way to keep Wemo devices functional after the cutoff is to use Apple HomeKitโbut even that only applies if the devices are set up in HomeKit before the shutdown date.
This news follows a trend of big tech shakeups. Recently, even X briefly blocked Reuters in India, confusing journalists and media followers. Much like Belkin’s shift, these sudden changes leave users scrambling for alternatives.

What will still work after the Wemo shutdown?
After January 2026, only a handful of Wemo devices will remain operational, and even those must meet specific conditions.
The devices that will continue working include:
-
Wemo Smart Plug with Thread (SKU: WSP100)
-
Wemo Stage Scene Controller (WSC010)
-
Wemo Dimmer with Thread (WLS0503)
-
Wemo Smart Video Doorbell (WDC010), but only via HomeKit
Any Wemo product that is compatible with Apple HomeKit can keep functioning, but only if set up through HomeKit before January 31, 2026. If users delay, even compatible devices could lose their functionality.
For everyone else, the shutdown means:
-
No remote access
-
No voice control through Alexa or Google Assistant
-
No app updates or technical support
-
No future firmware patches or security updates
Belkin has also confirmed that customers with Wemo products still under warranty as of the shutdown date may be eligible for a partial refund. However, refund processing will only start after January 31, 2026. No exact refund amounts or methods have been shared yet.
Do you have any of these Wemo products. They are part of the Wemo app controls and support. Wemo has decided not to continue provide support for these products. They call them “older products” but some were sold as recently as 2023. From their email:

Why is Belkin shutting down Wemo support?
The Wemo brand had already shown signs of slowing down. In 2023, Belkin publicly backed off from the Matter standard, saying it would โtake a big step back, regroup, and rethinkโ its approach to smart home tech.
That rethink has now clearly resulted in a strategic retreat. Since 2023, no new Wemo products have been released. This latest announcement confirms Belkin is effectively exiting the general smart home device space, or at least heavily limiting its role within it.
The company has not shared any plans for a replacement product line or a new direction, although it seems to be narrowing its focus to HomeKit-only integrations. This may reflect a desire to support a smaller but more controlled user base that fits within Appleโs secure, privacy-focused environment.
Itโs not the first time in recent months that tech companies have shifted focus rapidly. Samsungโs foldables recently made headlines for pushing hardware boundaries, while other firms like Nintendo are exploring new product generations like the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2. Belkin, on the other hand, is pulling back entirely.
What Wemo users can do now to stay
If youโre currently using Wemo devices, now is the time to take action, especially if you want to avoid having non-functional gear by early 2026.
Hereโs what you can do to prepare:
-
Set up your Wemo devices with Apple HomeKit
If your device supports HomeKit, make sure itโs integrated and working through Appleโs system before January 31, 2026. After that, it may be too late. -
Check if your product qualifies for a refund
Keep your receipts and check warranty dates. If your Wemo device is still under warranty by the shutdown date, you could be eligible for a partial refund. Details on how to apply will be shared after the shutdown takes effect. -
Explore alternative smart home ecosystems
If youโre not in the Apple ecosystem, now may be a good time to research other smart home platforms like Amazon Alexa, Google Home, or systems that support Matter. You can also look into new AI-powered platforms that are expanding rapidly, like Elon Muskโs Grok 4 AI, which recently made waves for breaking AI benchmarks, though not without controversy, as seen in the Grok AI Hitler incident. -
Download any needed settings or data
With app and cloud support ending, Wemo app updates will also stop. Download any usage data or settings that you may need before January 2026.
These proactive steps will help Wemo users maintain some control during the transition and avoid losing access to essential smart home functions.
