Key Points
  • Apple Intelligence AI features will come out for iPhones in 2025.
  • iOS 18 launches with limited AI capabilities this September.
  • Full AI features are expected with iOS 18.4 in early 2025.
  • New AI functionalities powered by Apple Private Cloud.

Apple’s anticipated artificial intelligence (AI) features, which it is calling Apple Intelligence, won’t be available on iPhones until early 2025 despite the imminent release of iOS 18 this September.

Announced at WWDC 2024, they include advanced features such as on-device image generation that will now be rolled out gradually before a complete launch with iOS 18.4 in mid-2025.

Staged roll-out of AI

Several beta versions of iOS 18 have been issued but none include the flagship AI features. The initial release of iOS 18 will offer basic improvements and new functionalities without more sophisticated AI tools and according to Bloomberg users will receive these updates incrementally up until a significant update in iOS 18.4 during H1 of next year.

The phased approach suggests that Apple is prioritizing stability and security over swift deployment that allows for wider-reaching testing and feedback before public release. The first-ever public beta of iOS will be more stable and support more than 20 different iPhone models from this autumn onwards.

Apple private cloud

One notable aspect of Apple Intelligence is that it harnesses the power of what the company calls “Apple Private Cloud”. This cloud technology is marketed as being even safer than common artificial intelligence solutions because it ensures users’ data remains secure.

Some functions of the software work on-device while others use this private cloud infrastructure—a dual approach meant to improve both performance and safety.

The prospects for AI on Apple devices

Other products running on M series chips made by Apple Silicon like iPads or Macs etc., might also see implementation of these AI advances around late 2024 or early 2025, which would indicate that this is a more broad-based update across the whole ecosystem of Apple.

So it shows that they are serious about integrating high-level artificial intelligence into their hardware and software.

As Apple works on its AI technology further to make it smarter and more intuitive for users across all of their devices, there is still much waiting ahead for groundbreaking features like these.
