Google Play Store changes have been temporarily paused following a recent ruling in Google’s favor. The U.S. District Court has allowed the tech giant to delay the modifications ordered in response to a lawsuit from Epic Games.

These changes were meant to open the Play Store to third-party app stores by November 1, but the court decision has given Google more time to appeal.

Change in Google Play Store policies and it’s Backlash

This legal saga originated with the Epic Games Company as a result of Apple and Google extracting cuts from app platforms, whose primary purpose was to get the publishers to develop their apps for their platforms.

Epic, which has firmly established a foothold in the gaming niche, believes that this would encourage more competition among developers and bring prices down.

But against such a background, Google has remained opposed to the changes, arguing that this is to benefit user security and privacy.

As stated on Google, allowing ease of incorporation of other app stores in the ecosystem of Google Play may lead to Android devices having a higher vulnerability to malware and breaches.

The firm has pointed out that its exclusive internal payment system, billing, and security features are essential for the protection of important stakeholders, as both developers and users may be affected in negative ways.

Google claims that if such systems were allowed to be nonexistent and these changes in Play Store were effective, severe security threats would be in existence.

Lee-Anne Mulholland sees the Vice President of Google, as a negative stand, that at least these changes could affect more than a hundred people across the states including especially Android users and several hundreds of thousands of developers.

She stressed that the company has to wait longer enough to make sure these changes are made safely without compromising the users’ security and privacy.

Epic Games Pushes for Swift Google Play Store Changes

From Epic Games’ perspective, Google has used the gradual omission of third-party stores as a means to expand and with delayed launching. The company argues that if competitive channels are established, it can prevent developers from imposing high rates for the services and create variations in consumers’ offerings.

Epic makes it very clear in its statement that the injunction of the court to integrate the Play Store is nothing but a step towards addressing the issues faced by the developers, who pay a high commission on in-app purchases.

They further claimed that games like “Call of Duty” were being used in aggressive marketing since launching was accompanied by threats over security issues – which is Google’s not-so-subtle demonstration of dominance over the marketplace as it pushes for monopolistic practices.

Understandably, Epic, who has had run-ins with big tech, most notably Apple, has actively been trying to sidestep the conventional app stores, opting to supply its renowned games, Fortnite amongst others, via other options that are less costly than those of Google.

The order of the court did not prevent Google from seeking an appeal for a longer period but clearly, both companies are still circling in search of an elephant in the room.

As such development keeps happening in this case, many are curious about what the changes in the Google Play Store will mean for the future of such as venues as websites for the distribution of apps.

As Google continues its attempts to enforce its Play Store policies, both developers and users wonder if the court will uphold the reversal order, as almost every other order demands progress to be made.

Should the injunction be observed, developers would have an easier time distributing their apps on other platforms away from Google’s dominion, which may ultimately level the almost monopoly that Google has regarding the dissemination of applications across Android devices.

Currently, Google has been granted a short reprieve with the imposed stay directions which allows them to appeal, although one expects this not to be the last encounter.

Subsequently, the case will have to be headed by Epic Games as changes are implemented, whereas Google on the other hand still painted the picture of protecting the accounts and private details of affected users.
