The tool is currently available to Google Workspace users on Business, Enterprise, and Education tiers — including Gemini AI Pro and Ultra subscribers. And while it’s still limited to text-only outputs and a 200-cell maximum per run, it’s a clear step toward AI-powered productivity.

Gemini AI function brings serious automation to Sheets

The new =AI() function acts like a mini-writer inside your spreadsheet. Just highlight the cells and describe what you want the AI to do.

Example 1:
To write formal ad copy targeting specific customers:
=AI("Write a formal ad copy for the product. Cater copy to the objective and target audience.", A2:C2)

Example 2:
To summarize feedback from several customers in one line each:
=AI("For the customer, write a one sentence summary of their feedback.", A2:D2)

This means if you have hundreds of rows of raw input — like demographics, reviews, or inquiries — Gemini AI can give you personalized content at scale. You can ask it to classify inputs (e.g., compliment vs return request), generate summaries, or even localize business types by region.

While this feature is designed for text only and doesn’t generate numbers or formulas (yet), it complements the existing Gemini Q&A features in Sheets, which can already answer data questions and generate charts.

That said, it comes with a few limits:

• The function only supports up to 200 cells per use. To process more, you’ll need to do it in batches.

• Gemini can only see the cells you’ve selected. It doesn’t pull info from your whole sheet or your Google Drive.

• The tool currently only outputs text, not formulas, numbers, or images.

Google also provides sample prompts and use cases on their official support page, giving users a clear jumpstart on how to integrate AI directly into their workflows.
