Key Points

  • ChatGPT App Revenue Hits $2B, Crushing Grok and Claude
  • App earns $2.91 per install globally; $10 per install in the U.S.
  • Revenue up 673% YoY in 2025, reaching $1.35B by July
  • Grok, Claude, Copilot trail far behind in revenue and installs

Since launching in May 2023, OpenAIโ€™s ChatGPT app for iOS and Android has achieved a massive $2 billion in global consumer spending, according to analytics from Appfigures.

This puts it far ahead of rivals like Claude, Copilot, and Grok, by about 30x combined lifetime revenue.

In 2025 alone, ChatGPT pulled in $1.35 billion between January and July, which represents a 673% increase compared to the same period in 2024, when it made just $174 million.

Monthly earnings now sit at $193 million, up dramatically from $25 million per month last year.

Its closest competitor, Grok (developed by Elon Muskโ€™s xAI), generated just $25.6 million this year so far, just 1.9% of ChatGPTโ€™s revenue pace. Grok’s struggles follow a rough year, marked by multiple controversies, including a major leadership exit at xAI that further shook confidence in the product.

When it comes to ChatGPT app revenue, OpenAI is operating in a league of its own.

Mobile AI Rivals Struggle to Keep Up

When you look at how much each app earns per download, ChatGPT wins again. It earns $2.91 per global install, compared to:

  • Claude: $2.55

  • Grok: $0.75

  • Copilot: $0.28

In the U.S., the earnings per install are even higherโ€”$10, making the country a key market that accounts for 38% of ChatGPTโ€™s global app revenue. Germany follows with 5.3% of total spend.

In terms of user growth, ChatGPT continues to dominate app stores. The app has been installed 690 million times globally and is currently seeing 45 million new downloads each month, a 180% increase from the same period last year.

In 2025 so far, the app has added 318 million downloads, nearly triple the 113 million installs in early 2024. India leads in total installs at 13.7%, followed by the U.S. with 10.3%.

Grok, on the other hand, was late to the game. It launched on the X platform in November 2023 but didnโ€™t have its own iOS app until January 2025, and didnโ€™t reach Android users until March 2025. This delay has impacted growth significantly, limiting Grok to just 39.5 million installs to date.

Meanwhile, competitors like Claude have been rolling out advanced features, such as a powerful memory recall update, but are still trailing behind in traction and installs.

Why ChatGPT’s App Strategy is Winning

A major factor behind the ChatGPT app revenue success is timing and accessibility.

OpenAI launched its app early, made it available on both iOS and Android, and focused on delivering a polished mobile experience. This gave it a massive head start over its rivals.

Another smart move? Monetization. ChatGPT offers freemium access, but places many of its most advanced features behind a ChatGPT Plus subscription, including access to GPT-4, code generation, and memory features. This model converts casual users into paying customers efficiently.

The app also leverages the strength of its brand recognition, helped by being one of the first widely adopted AI tools. Even as competitors entered the market, ChatGPT had already built deep user habits and trust.

Additionally, the consistent updates, intuitive UX, and wide integrations into tools like Microsoft Copilot have made ChatGPT more useful beyond chat, turning it into a mobile productivity powerhouse.

Its latest improvements echo the kind of innovation seen in the GPT-5 update that surprised users with subtle but impactful changes.

Itโ€™s also worth noting that while others are focused on corporate, partnerships like Cohereโ€™s $6.8B valuation deal with AMD, OpenAIโ€™s approach leans toward user-focused experiences and everyday utility.

And while Meta deals with issues like AI rules leaks and transparency challenges, ChatGPT is moving ahead, driven by strong consumer confidence and unmatched mobile traction.
