Same Design, Much Better Noise Cancellation
Apple kept the same aluminum and mesh design as the original AirPods Max. The headband, ear cushions, and overall shape have not changed.
What did change is the noise cancellation. The H2 chip — the same chip in AirPods Pro 2 — makes ANC up to 1.5 times more effective. Apple also added a new high dynamic range amplifier for cleaner audio playback.
Spatial Audio got an upgrade too. Apple says content “sounds better than ever,” though we will have to wait for independent tests to confirm that.
Apple Intelligence Is the Real Upgrade
The biggest changes in AirPods Max 2 are powered by software, not hardware. Apple Intelligence unlocks features that were not possible on the original model.
Live Translation is the most practical new feature. The headphones translate conversation in real time — useful for travel or multilingual households. Just tap, and both sides of a conversation come through in your language.
Camera Remote is the most unusual addition. Press the Digital Crown and it triggers the shutter or starts video on a paired iPhone or iPad. Your AirPods Max 2 become a wireless camera remote. Voice Isolation for calls rounds out the list — it filters out background noise so callers only hear your voice.

The Audio Specs Creators Will Care About
One spec stands out for musicians and video creators. The USB-C port on AirPods Max 2 now supports lossless audio at 24-bit, 48 kHz. The original model could not do this.
Apple is also adding studio-quality audio recording. The headphones can capture sound at a professional level — not just play it back. That is a clear play for content creators who want a compact recording setup.
Bluetooth jumps from 5.0 to 5.3. Battery life stays at 20 hours with ANC on — unchanged from the original.
Is $549 Worth It Against the Competition?
Sony’s WH-1000XM6 and Bose’s QuietComfort Ultra both cost less. Both have been refreshed recently. They are strong headphones at a lower price.
Apple’s bet is on ecosystem lock-in. Live Translation, Camera Remote, and Adaptive Audio only work with iPhone. If you are already deep in the Apple stack, those features are hard to find elsewhere.
Early preorder shipping dates will tell us how strong demand is. If estimated delivery slips from early April to late April within the first 24 hours, Apple moved a lot of units today.
