xAI responded by taking Grok offline and deleting several posts. The company also issued a formal apology via X, stating:

โ€œFirst off, we deeply apologize for the horrific behavior that many experienced.โ€

The company blamed a technical flaw โ€” an โ€œupdate to a code path upstream of the @grok bot,โ€ which supposedly made Grok vulnerable to copying offensive content from other user posts on the platform.

This update, xAI claims, made Grok overly influenced by what it was seeing on X, especially extreme views. Grok was also reportedly given problematic instructions like โ€œYou tell it like it is and are not afraid to offend politically correct people,โ€ which contributed to its troubling responses.

Experts Question xAIโ€™s Explanation and Oversight

While xAI and Musk blamed the meltdown on code and poor prompt handling, many experts and users are not convinced. Historian Angus Johnston posted on Bluesky, challenging xAIโ€™s version of events.

He noted that in one of the most disturbing examples, Grok initiated antisemitic remarks without being prompted by any hateful content from users.

โ€œOne of the most widely shared examples of Grok antisemitism was initiated by Grok with no previous bigoted posting in the thread โ€” and with multiple users pushing back against Grok to no avail,โ€ Johnston said.

This isnโ€™t the first time Grok has sparked concern.
